JACK DEFROST – Traceworks Dance

21st August 2021

JACK DEFROST is an enchanting dance performance, unravelling the traditional character of Jack Frost and his journey through changing seasons and new environments. In this engaging and original short production, he discovers the magic of nature and adapts to change.

The pop-up show was created in 2021 from a desire to bring professional dance into outdoor community settings, and particularly to those who are more isolated. Traceworks were keen that the show inspired an appreciation for nature, as well as enlivening the senses of their audiences. Research took them to the heritage of Jack Frost and different interpretations in literature and artwork. The intention was to link the audience to their own intangible heritage and the essence of the character, by using recognisable elements but also by creating something original to inspire them creatively.

As well as being reflected in the choreography, these heritage elements were present in aspects of the costume and make-up, and traditional folk music was used within some parts of the soundtrack. Audiences own memories were discussed in the touring of the show encouraging storytelling and with inspirations their own artistic interpretations were created.

Loved the production, really imaginative and tells a story.

Audience feedback

The original community tour of JACK DEFROST saw the show performed to a wide variety of audiences across London and further afield. Venues and locations included festivals, parks, doorsteps, care homes, sheltered housing, community centres, a mental health unit, health centre, support groups, community groups, a woodland sculpture trail, a market place, and museum.

We were so lucky to be able to welcome Traceworks Dance to one of our groups last week – JACK DEFROST was mesmerising and held us all with a beautifully choreographed performance in our nature reserve.

Audience feedback

The show has since formed part of the Mayor of London’s #LetsDoLondon campaign to welcome tourists back into the city after the pandemic, with performances popping up at a range of vibrant locations including Canary Wharf Roof Garden, Battersea Power Station and King’s Cross Station.

JACK DEFROST continues to tour, and is available for booking in community settings, and at festivals and events. In 2024, the show was booked for Glastonbury Festival.
