A new creative postal project running from September 2020

Whats On

We are so happy to be able to announce the launch of the Imagination Museum: Mayflower Creative Care Package project, a new initiative designed to connect people with the story of the sailing of the Mayflower, which took place 400 years ago this year.

The project, which will be rolled out from September 2020, will see creative activities sent by post to participants who were due to take part in Made By Katie Green’s Mayflower 400 events that were postponed or cancelled earlier this year due to the pandemic.

The Imagination Museum: Mayflower 400 project has been touring since 2019 and was originally due to be presented across more than 25 heritage sites, museums, schools, churches and community centres, in a route that connected places that were significant to the stories of many of the passengers who sailed from England to America in 1620.

Earlier this year, the project, like everything else, came to an abrupt halt. However, with support through Arts Council England’s emergency funding and from project partners West Lindsey District Council and The Box, Plymouth, the company has been working hard behind the scenes to develop a takeaway version of the Imagination Museum project that can be sent through the post.

Inside the Creative Care Package, recipients will find information about the passengers and crew who made the journey in 1620, as well as activities that have been created using the experiences the company have already had when sharing the project in Lincolnshire, North Nottinghamshire and Hampshire. The aim is to give participants the opportunity to put themselves in the footsteps of the passengers, also reflecting on their own experiences of lockdown when many people have been separated from loved ones for such a long time.

Initially the company has arranged a limited print run of 1000 of the packages, the majority of which are already assigned to the many community groups and schools engaged in the Imagination Museum: Mayflower 400 project. However, there will be a very limited number of 20 free packages available for people to request online at www.imaginationmuseum.co.uk/carepackage after the launch on the 7th September. If you miss one of those, some of the creative activities will also be there to download or watch online - take a look at this video as an example:

Alternatively, please register for the waiting list on the Care Package page here to be notified if new packages become available.

We look forward to hearing from you!

The Imagination Museum: Mayflower Creative Care Package Project is managed by Made By Katie Green as part of The Imagination Museum: Mayflower 400 project (a Spirit of Mayflower 400 project), and has been created collaboratively by choreographer Katie Green, writer Anna Selby, workshop designer Ruth Pigott and designers Root Studio, with additional writing and consultation from Jo Loosemore. It has been funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England (Emergency Funding), West Lindsey District Council/Pilgrim Roots, and The Box, Plymouth.
